Black Inspired
For over 30 years, Rev. Dr. Alex Gee has sought meaningful Black solutions for his native city of Madison. The Center is his vision – and the community’s conduit – for challenging structures that impede diversity and sustained Black advancement.
Black Led
Black elders and youth are an anchor in our culture, and they will be an anchor in the facility. From fundraising to program development, Black leadership regardless of age is central to The Center’s success.
Dr. Gee Creates Solutions
"There isn’t a space quite like this anywhere else in the country. We’re excited to help the team at The Center bring a cultural gathering space to Madison that will definitely serve as a model for other cities to follow.”

President of U.S. operations at Lord Cultural Resources
Emerging Excellence
Programming focuses on children and young adults at the critical flash points of their lives: the transitional years of middle and high school, young adulthood and early chapters of their professional lives. Programming is designed with precision to serve specific segments of the Black community in the Greater Madison Area, who are often underserved and overlooked
Criminal Justice and Reentry
programming provides sober living, peer-support, leadership training and system-change advocacy for individuals involved in the criminal legal system in Dane County. We provide a wide array of culturally competent and relevant programs to meet the needs of men who are leaving jail or prison and who are living with the long term effects of their experiences/impact of the criminal legal system.
Justified Anger Movement
In 2013, Dr. Gee wrote an article titled "Justified Anger" that woke up a community to the need for systemic change. Justified Anger, an initiative of Nehemiah, was created to transform a community with one of the largest racial disparities in the country, fueling a movement of systemic change that has spread through the business, education, health, and faith sectors.
Learning That Transforms Communities
Justified Anger: Courses is a learning platform with the purpose of understanding how the African American experience has shaped the world we all live in, and how allies can find roles supporting racial justice today. Rooted in our history, and understanding how we got here, helps us move forward together to make a better world and a stronger local community.
"I am not the same person who entered the program and the relationships I gained are invaluable...This program has allowed me to reflect on my mission and through each session, I have truly found my center.”
