This Dane County judge offered a suggestion in one of our meetings last year that led to the creation of our @ja_madison @nehemiahmadison #CourtObservers program. We have data on over 500 OBSERVED court cases. Observers are blown away by the different process that black/brown defendants receive. #FactsArePowerful ~ This team of volunteers is eventually morphing into a @ja_madison #CourtAdvocacy project!! Our white allies are helping us to dismantle unjust systems!

For 18 months I have convened a group consisting of a judge, a retired federal prosecutor, DA, reentry professionals, formerly incarcerated individuals, researchers, State public defender, nonprofit leaders and other collaborators to address Wisconsin’s dismal judicial justice. We met for dinner in my home this week. Others WILL follow our leadership when we lead!!

My daughter, a library science grad student, and I discussed this book today. She learned about it during a black children’s imagination lecture. Little did she know that it’s one of the first books I checked out from the Chicago public library and read as a kindergartner in 1968. I moved to Wisconsin in 1970… This book is probably the last time I saw a black lead fictional-child character in a book (baring slaves & servants) until my teens!! What impact do you think that had on my own black imagination? It gives me new info to think about as I consider the gross racial disparities for Blacks in the state of Wisconsin. #BlackLiteratureMatters #LibrariansTakeNote #ParentsTakeNote
