Like many of my colleagues—and many of my coaching clients and parishioners—I arrived at a place a few years ago where I knew that I was not listening to my heart and that I was not living the purpose that I was created to live. As an African-American pastor and community activist, I had accomplished a good deal as a young man—acquired a bunch of accolades and popularity—but deep in my soul I felt distant from God, distant from self, distant from family, and distant from a passion for my destiny. I had searched for significance in work, busyness and pleasing others. I finally discovered that I needed to "play" to an audience of one and heed the divine purpose for which I was created, rather than seeking the pleasure of the fickle masses. I had become so skilled at pleasing others that I had forgotten how to please the Creator, my family and myself. And even though I was involved in activities that were very positive and important matters, I was going about them the wrong way.

I eventually realized that I could not please others or myself until I was properly aligned with the Creator’s will for my life. I was stripped of my old haunting beliefs that said that if something felt good or benefited me, it must be evil. I was astonished to discover that the Creator inspires my desires. Not my lusts and whims---but my true desires. Years of study, contemplation, journaling as well as meeting with a Spiritual Director, led me to a passion for living and serving and thriving, that I have never experienced before. I felt as if I had been born again. I realized that the Creator of the universe was in my corner cheering me on in marriage, life, my career and my dream. Who could destroy me when the Creator is upholding me? Life is good! And now my passion is helping others to find theirs.

What if I were to tell you that you were created to succeed? What if I were to tell you that life is more than pressing your nose to the outside window of a candy store? What if I were to tell you that the not only does the shopkeeper invite you in, but the chief candy-maker does as well? You’re not an outsider! Live like it! Your nose was created for smelling the candy inside, not for pressing it against a windowpane.
